From a geeks perspective...?
Geek: "a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc." *
What does a typical geek look like? How do you define a "geek" in the first place...? Just a few days ago I was having a conversation with one of my customers and the subject of "being referred to as a geek" came up. The person I was talking to seemed to be under the impression that calling someone like me a "geek" may somehow be offensive...
My response was something like this: "Well, it depends a little on who is saying it and what the context is. If it was some technophobic twat using the term in a derogative way, then yes it might be mildy offensive, although I would probably just laugh! If, on the other hand, it was a person whom I perceived to be quite knowledgable.., a technology guru of some sort, then being called a "Geek" would be a compliment".
But back to the question. How do YOU define a geek? Is it what he/she looks like? Is it the way they talk? Is it the things they talk about? Is it the things they do? Is it the environment in which they spend most of their time? What else?
I don't think I look like a typical geek but that is subjective (see previous paragraph). I don't know if I talk like a geek? But when it comes to 'environment', one of the comments I get a lot when someone steps into my little workshop for the first time is: "wow!". This is often followed by something like: "You've got a lot of stuff in here!".
For those not in a position to visit.... take a look at the photos below to get an idea of what my "mission control" looks like.
Does this qualify as "geeky"? See if you can work out how many computers I use on a regular basis... (refer to other posts on this site to learn more about the specifics of my 'setup')
