Linux Mint 8 "Helena" RC1
Just downloaded and installed Linux Mint 8 "Helena" RC1. Sweet!
I currently have it running in Virtualbox on top of Mint 7 and will wait for the full release before upgrading my main system but I really like what I've seen so far.
There is some discussion going on here about the "dress" (theme & wallpaper) Helena should be wearing when the full release comes out. Personally, I really like 'Dew' (Mint 7 default) as the wallpaper and don't think it needs to be changed, although it could be argued that a new release should include a new look. I'm not a big fan of the current proposed wallpaper (RC1 default by Johonunu). Not that there is anything wrong with it. It's just a little to bland for my liking. On the other hand, the "Fresh" wallpaper is much more colorful and attractive..... just a bit too busy.
I hope they stick with the Shiki Theme regardless of the chosen wallpaper.
I'd love to see something similar to "Dew" in terms of impact and effect but a little more like "Fresh" in termes of color range (light/dark). It's virtually impossible to create a 'look' that everyone will love (and very hard to improve on the look of "Gloria") but with the nature and size of the Mint community, I'm confident they'll come up with a great solution.
All of the above is beside the point when it comes to my main system because I use a tri-screen setup and like using wallpapers from Digital Blasphemy because they look great and are designed to be used on two or three screens.
I do think first impressions are very important so it's worth thinking about and nutting out.
In the mean time, I'll continue to wait with high expectations for the full 64bit realease of Mint 8!

Thanks for sharing, I hadn't heard of linux mint previously but the UI looks very nice and everyone loves digital blasphemy wallpapers. Is linux mint debian or redhat based?

Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu
Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu (with numerous changes & additions), which in turn is based on debian.... New relases of Mint usually follow about a month after the latest release of ubuntu.
