Intel i7 920 Processor
The 'Core' component of my new system is the Intel Core i7 920 Processor (pun intended). The i7 is a significant step up from the previous range of Core2 processors. From Intel:
"Brilliantly fast"
"With faster, intelligent, multi-core technology that applies processing power where it's needed most, new Intel® Core™ i7 processors deliver an incredible breakthrough in PC performance. They are the best desktop processor family on the planet.¹
You'll multitask applications faster and unleash incredible digital media creation. And you'll experience maximum performance for everything you do, thanks to the combination of Intel® Turbo Boost technology² and Intel® Hyper-Threading technology (Intel® HT technology)³, which maximizes performance to match your workload."
But then, they would say something like that! To be fair though, I have to say this thing rips! I have mine installed on an Asus P6T Deluxe V2 Mainboard that in turn lives in a Thermaltake Element S case.
The i7 is a quad core processor but due to the design (hyperthreading), it is actually detected as an 8 core processor on my Linux box. It's pretty cool to go into System Management (Resource Monitor) and see all 8 cores at work...! It's rare to see this processor working very hard. It just seems to do everything with ease.
Specific tasks like video editing or music encoding are handled effortlessly. Some software (like Grip on Linux) provides an option to select how many cores it should use when encoding audio files: watching it encode 8 tracks at a time and complete a whole CD of songs in around 30 seconds is a wonder to hehold! (hey, if you've been around since the days of AT's and XT's with 4 or 8Mhz processors, like I have, you'll know what I mean!!)
You can read more about the general performance of my system, including this processor, here (not done yet).
Overall Opinion: "Brillianly Fast!" ... now where have I heard that before?
